Therefore, it’s important to maintain the balance between Glutamate and other neurotransmitters, such as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that counters the excitatory effects of Glutamate.

What is GABA?

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is an amino acid that acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and nervous system. This means that it helps to reduce the activity of neurons in the brain, helping to regulate mood, anxiety, and sleep.

When a nerve impulse reaches the synapse (the junction between two nerve cells), GABA is released from the presynaptic neuron and binds to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. On the other hand, the synthesis of Glutamate starts with the conversion of alpha-ketoglutarate, a metabolite of the citric acid cycle, to Glutamate by the enzyme Glutamate dehydrogenase. This process requires the presence of NAD+ as a cofactor.
